Pondicherry University, a Central University, was established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament with the objective to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of study as it may deem fit and more specifically, to make special provisions for studies in French and for integrated courses in Science, Social Sciences and Humanities. The aim is to encourage inter-disciplinary studies and research in the University. The MHRD - India Rankings 2020 ranked the Pondicherry University at 58 th place among University Category and 81st place in the Overall Category by a ranking process through National Institutional Ranking Framework. In the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economics University Rankings 2020, University is placed under 201-250 category. University is ranked in 251-300 category in Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2020.
The University has 15 Schools, 38 Departments, 12 Centres and One Chair offering over 132 PG, PG Integrated, P.G.Diploma/Certificate & Research programmes. Students are selected through an All-India Common Entrance Examination through online mode as well as CAT score. The University has been receiving more than 41,000 applications for its various programmes. The University has more than 6500 students (48% of the students are female students) including 40 Foreign students on its rolls. The University has enrolled 933 students which includes 42% of female students for the Doctoral Research Programmes under various Schools / Departments / Centres. The evening programmes offered are open to regular students and they can also choose from over 17 PG Diploma/Certificate courses, including Foreign Languages, which will add value to the main PG Degrees. There are over 51,515 students in its 92 affiliated colleges.
